Job Description: Archives Cataloger

Position Title: Archives Cataloger
Department: Library and Information Science
Reports To: Archiving Manager

Job Summary:
The Archives Cataloger is responsible for organizing and cataloging archival materials within the library's collection. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring efficient access and retrieval of archival materials for research and reference purposes. The Archives Cataloger will work closely with the archiving team to maintain accurate and up-to-date archival records.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Catalog archival materials, including manuscripts, documents, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and other records, using established standards and best practices.
2. Organize and arrange archival materials in a systematic and logical manner to facilitate easy retrieval and access.
3. Create detailed and accurate finding aids, inventories, and descriptive metadata for archival collections, adhering to professional archival standards and guidelines.
4. Collaborate with archiving team members to identify and resolve cataloging and metadata-related issues.
5. Conduct research and analysis on archival materials to enhance their description and context for users.
6. Assist in the identification, selection, and acquisition of relevant archival materials based on the library's collection development policies.
7. Ensure the proper handling, preservation, and storage of archival materials to prevent damage or deterioration.
8. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all cataloging activities, including statistics and reports.
9. Stay updated with emerging trends, technologies, and professional practices in archival cataloging and information management.

Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
2. Proven experience working with archival collections, preferably in a library, museum, or archival institution.
3. Strong knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards, such as DACS, EAD, and MARC.
4. Familiarity with cataloging tools and systems, including integrated library systems (ILS) and archival content management systems (CMS).
5. Proficient in using metadata schemas and controlled vocabularies, such as Dublin Core, LCSH, and AAT.
6. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
7. Attention to detail and accuracy in cataloging and metadata creation.
8. Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to gather, evaluate, and synthesize information from various sources.
9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively present complex information.
10. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
11. Knowledge of preservation and conservation practices for archival materials is desirable.
12. Familiarity with emerging technologies and digital preservation practices is a plus.
